On Friday, September 28th, Peace Boat US celebrated Climate Week NYC with a special event, “Global Partnerships for Climate Action – Ocean + Climate” with local partners focused on environmental action, ocean conservation, eco-fashion, technology and innovation for sustainability. During the event, Ecoship was introduced as a transformative solution to protect the oceans and promote higher engagement and trigger creative actions through sustainable tourism and education.

The event highlighted the importance of partnerships for transformation towards a more peaceful and sustainable society. Panelists from a variety of fields shared their contributions on the realization of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using their own unique tools and approaches. During the event, a short documentary of Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme, “Against the Tide”, was screened.

Director of Peace Boat US, Emilie McGlone shared the upcoming “Youth for the SDGs” scholarship which welcomes students and young people between the ages of 18 – 30 years old from all backgrounds and nationalities who are currently involved in SDG-related activities and have a strong desire to learn about sustainable development to join the upcoming South America tour. Ms. McGlone also introduced Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassadors Programme which brings youth leaders from states on the front line of climate change and marine degradation to travel onboard Peace Boat’s ship, engaging in capacity building and bringing their message to citizens and government representatives through the voyage.

To close the event, Ms. Tiffany Bethel, an Officer from the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago shared a message on behalf of Ambassador Beckles, highlighting the importance of the health of the oceans for a small island developing state countries. “We must embody the spirit of the SDGs and ‘leaving no one behind’, with human beings and the environment at heart”, she stated”.
