United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand

An Ecoship and Peace Boat delegation are travelling to Bangkok (Thailand) to take part in the Asia-Pacific Climate Week 2019 (APCW), an event to boost the region’s response to the current climate emergency. The event will take place at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand, from 2 to 6 September 2019.

The APCW provides a space to develop multi-stakeholder climate action in the spirit of the Talanoa Dialogue, in reference to the traditional Pacific islands notion of an inclusive, participatory and transparent dialogue. Peace Boat and Ecoship will organize an event titled “Industry transition and multi-stakeholder engagement for climate action and the SDGs” on Friday 6thSeptember. The side event will in look at the importance of mobilisation and multi-stakeholder engagement for climate action in the Asia-Pacific region, exploring involvement with civil society and particularly youth through education and awareness-raising such programmes as Peace Boat’s Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme (OCYAP). OCYAP brings youth from SIDS including in the Asia-Pacific region onboard Peace Boat’s Global Voyages for capacity training and to share their message for climate action. Examples of civil society engagement for climate action will include examples of crossover to other fields including peacebuilding and human rights.

Some of the participants in this event will be Linh Do, Australia and Pacific lead for The Climate Reality Project; Ra’eed Ali, Project Officer, Alliance for Future Generations, Fiji; and Marte Hellema, Programme Manager Information, Communication and Publication for Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA). The event will take place from 13:30 to 14:25 at the venue Theatre.

The APCW is being organized by the United Nations Climate Change in partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and other international and regional organizations, which include the United Nations Environment Programme, the United Nations Environment Programme DTU Partnership, the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank Group, the Asian Development Bank, the International Emissions Trading Association, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies and the Climate Technology Centre and Network.

The results of the APCW will feed into the outcome of the Climate Action Summit organized by the Secretary-General on September 23rd in New York, thereby boosting ambition and accelerating the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The results of the APCW will also be a key contribution to the UN Climate Change Conference (COP25) to be held in Santiago, Chile, from 2 to 13 December.
