Official side event on Ecoship at the UN Global Sustainable Transport Conference

We invite you to join us at Peace Boat’s official side event “Ecoship: A transition model for decarbonizing the Maritime Sector’ at the second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference to be held in Beijing. The conference will bring together key stakeholders from Governments, UN system and other international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to discuss the integrated and cross-cutting nature of sustainable transport and its multiple roles in supporting the achievement of the 2030 Agenda.

Peace Boat’s side event will be held virtually on October 15.  We will hear from Ecoship Founder and Director, Yoshioka Tatsuya how Ecoship will drive momentum as a transition model for the maritime sector. Focusing on the conference theme of “Sustainable transport and green development: climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience”, the event will demonstrate how Ecoship will address the climate crisis through energy efficiency and renewable energies. 6,000 m2 of solar panels will cover 100% of the ship’s lighting needs and Ecoship will be fitted with 10 retractable sails with flexible solar panels.

Secretary-General of the International Windship Association (IWSA) will expand on the role of windpower in the maritime sector and we will hear from DNV, the world’s leading classification society and a recognized advisor for the maritime industry, about the momentum behind wind-assisted propulsion, the industry direction, and what is needed for wider adoption of sustainable solutions.

The event will further expand the theme of climate change mitigation, adaptation and resilience by exploring Ecoship’s contribution to climate action through the diverse activities of NGO Peace Boat including educational programmes and advocacy through the example of Peace Boat’s annual Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme in which young leaders from SIDS travel onboard for capacity training and to speak about the impact on their communities with citizens and government representatives in the countries visited and at the UN.
