Ecoship Events at the UN Climate Change Conference COP28

Ecoship and Peace Boat will participate in COP28, the United Nations Climate Change conference to be held in Dubai, UAE, November 28 – December 12, 2023.  Ecoship will hold several side events.  Peace Boat will partner with other civil society organizations at COP28 to call for increased ambition on climate action and to support those on the front lines of the climate crisis, particularly Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

“COP28 must be a clear turning point. Governments must not only agree what stronger climate actions will be taken but also start showing exactly how to deliver them”, says UNFCCC Executive-Secretary, Simon Stiell.

Peace Boat and Ecoship will organize several side events in the UNFCCC administered Blue Zone. We are pleased to announce events focused on Ecoship as a model for the decarbonization of the maritime sector at the UN DESA SDG Pavilion, the Finland Pavilion and the Solar+ Pavilion.  We are delighted to partner with the International Windship Association (IWSA) of which Peace Boat is a member. We will hear from the Secretary General of IWSA, Gavin Allwright about the “Decade of Wind Propulsion” the role of windpower in the maritime sector, the industry direction, and what is needed for wider adoption of wind solutions.

The event at the SDG Pavilion, hosted by The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) will spotlight SDG7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG9 (Innovation, Industry, and Infrastructure), SDG14 (Life Below Water), as well as SDG13 (Climate Action) emphasizing wind power’s potential in maritime decarbonization through the example of Ecoship a flagship for UN SDGs.

Our event at the Finland Pavilion hosted by Business Finland and the Finnish government will include diverse speakers (sectors, gender, age, region), as well as a video of innovative solutions and dynamic interaction between participants. It will highlight Finland’s efforts in the decarbonization of the maritime sector.

The NGO Peace Boat will be organizing several events at COP28 focused on capacity building and youth empowerment. Several alumni of Peace Boat’s onboard capacity-building programmes, namely the “Ocean and Climate Youth Ambassador Programme for young leaders from SIDS and the “Youth for SDGs” program will be present at COP28 and speaking at Peace Boat’s side events. Events focused on youth empowerment and capacity building include an official UNFCCC side event, “Capacity Building for Intergenerational Leadership and Youth Empowerment on Climate and Ocean”, on December 10.  Peace Boat’s event at the Moana Blue Pacific Pavilion, on December 9, will feature a discussion amongst youth leading climate ambition and climate adaptation with focus on the value of capacity building and peer to peer exchange for youth across the Pacific, as well as from other large ocean states.  Alumni from Peace Boat’s onboard programmes will be speaking at the Ocean Pavilion, the Just Transition Pavilion, the Slovenia Pavilion, the Peru Pavilion and more.
