The Ecoship Project at the 66th UN DPI/NGO Conference in Korea
A delegation of the Ecoship team travelled to South Korea on the occasion of the 66th United Nations Department of Public Information (DPI)/Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Conference. This event, on the theme of “Education for Global Citizenship: Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals Together”, was held in the city of Gyeongju, from 30 May to 1 June 2016. It was the first of its kind to take place in Asia.
At our booth, Peace Boat presented its diverse educational and advocacy programmes relating to the Sustainable Development Goals, featuring Ecoship’s potential to sail as a flagship for Climate Action. We were honoured to host a visit by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and his wife, Yoo Soon-taek.
During the event, Peace Boat held a workshop together with the Korea Green Foundation on May 31, on the topic of “Empowering Youth to Find Solutions: Northeast Asian Models of Education for Peace, the Environment and the SDGs”.
The workshop detailed Peace Boat’s thirty-year experience of conducting education programmes for peace and sustainable development, highlighting onboard educational programmes and their contribution to Goal 4, and the Ecoship Project as a flagship for the SDGs and action for Goal 13, climate change. The world’s greenest cruise ship will provide a unique set of activities centered on experiential learning, intercultural communication and travel around the world, in the next stage of raising awareness and facilitating action to achieve the SDGs.
